USB 3.2 Gen 1 SuperSpeed (5Gbps) transfers large files significantly faster than USB 2.0 — copying a full 10GB folder of photos takes approximately 15–20 seconds on USB 3.2 Gen 1 versus several minutes on a USB 2.0 connection. The drive is backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports, so it works on any computer regardless of USB version. The USB cable is included in the box; no power adapter is required — the drive draws power directly from the USB port.
The built-in 256-bit AES hardware encryption protects the drive's contents at the hardware level, independent of the operating system. Enable password protection via WD Discovery software, set a personal password, and the drive's contents become inaccessible to anyone who connects the drive without the password — even on another computer. The hardware encryption does not require a continuous software process to maintain; the protection is always active once enabled.
WD Backup software (downloadable, Windows only) allows automatic scheduled backups from the computer to the My Passport drive — set the time and frequency, and the drive backs up the selected files automatically without requiring manual intervention. For Mac users, the drive can be reformatted for use with Time Machine. The drive ships pre-formatted as NTFS for Windows; reformatting to exFAT provides compatibility with both Windows and Mac without additional software.
