Six years in the making. One of the most ambitious open-world games ever made. Crimson Desert is the open-world action RPG from Pearl Abyss — the South Korean studio behind Black Desert Online — and after a development journey that began in 2019, it arrived on March 19, 2026 to widespread acclaim as one of the defining open-world games of this console generation. TechRadar called it "easily one of the best action-adventure games of this generation." Vice called it "the most ambitious open-world game since Red Dead Redemption 2." For players who want a massive, dense, handcrafted world to lose themselves in on PS5, Crimson Desert is the game of 2026.
You play as Kliff, the leader of the Greymanes mercenary clan, on the vast continent of Pywel — a gritty medieval fantasy world where your clan has been brutally attacked and scattered. The story follows Kliff's journey to reunite his people, reclaim what was lost, and navigate the political factions, hidden powers, and mortal dangers of a world that is as breathtaking as it is merciless. The world of Pywel is powered by Pearl Abyss's Black Space Engine, delivering draw distances, vertical environmental design, and lighting quality that reviewers consistently described as among the best-looking games on any platform.
The combat system has approximately 30 attack combinations across melee and ranged options — swords, axes, scythes, spears, crossbows, guns, bows, and magic — with a weight-based physics engine that makes every strike feel grounded and impactful. Enemies react realistically to being hit, can be knocked into terrain and objects, and use genuine AI rather than scripted patrol patterns. Abyss magic powers — unlocked through a skill tree — dramatically change traversal and combat as you progress. One of the earliest powers, the Axiom Force grappling hook, begins as a puzzle tool and evolves into a primary traversal mechanic.
Beyond combat, Crimson Desert contains base building and soldier management for the Greymane clan, gear customisation and an economy system, fishing, side quests and contained stories, dynamic animal and NPC relationships, Zelda-style physics puzzles, stealth mechanics, horseback combat, and dragon riding. Game Informer described the game's content as "utterly overwhelming" — over 100 hours of content that players in their 70th hour report feeling like they have barely touched.
On PS5, Crimson Desert supports PS5 Pro PSSR2 upscaling to 4K at higher frame rates with ray tracing — the Pearl Abyss-confirmed PS5 Pro enhancement that makes the world of Pywel render at its intended visual quality on the Pro hardware. Standard PS5 delivers a strong performance mode at 1080p/60fps.
Single-player only at launch. Pearl Abyss has indicated multiplayer DLC may arrive post-launch based on demand.
